So many hours crocheting and honestly, I'm starting to fell a little Loop - y!
There are four types of crochet hooks that can suit your hand.
Steel crochet hooks come in the smallest sizes. This type is used to make doilies and fine crochet projects.
Aluminium crochet hooks come in all sizes. It allows you to crochet smoothly. (My absolute favourite.)
Plastic crochet hooks come in common sizes. They are usually hollow and lightweight.
Bamboo crochet hooks are lightweight, like the plastic hooks. It usually comes in the smallest and largest sizes you can get. They also come in a medium size, but it is not very often that you will see them in shops. (I love the feeling of this hook in my hand.)
If you look at the label of any skein of yarn, there will be a suggested hook size as well as washing instructions for the project you are doing. You may need to swap again with a larger or smaller hook, depending on whether you are a loose or tight crocheter.
Here are the instructions for what hook goes with what ply of yarn:
Yarn | Crochet Hook |
2 - 3 ply | 1.50 - 2.25mm |
4 ply | 2.25 - 3.50mm |
5 ply | 3.50 - 4.00mm |
8 ply | 4.00 - 5.50mm |
10 ply | 5.50 - 6.50mm |
12 ply | 6.50 - 9.00mm |
14 ply | 9.00 - 15.00mm |
15+ ply | 15.00+mm |
I found this chart very helpful. I hope it can also help you with the beginning of your crochet journey or starting off a new project.
I've gotta go! Ya, girl is hooked and busy ❤
